DAN SUTHERLAND
Born and raised in Nelson, New Zealand, I now live in Queenstown, where I’ve been working as a Lead Driller for a geo-stabilization company specializing in the installation of ground anchors. This job allowed me to work hard for extended periods, then take time off to travel and pursue my passion—whitewater kayaking.
That passion eventually led to another: photography and videography.
While living in a van and kayaking my way across Canada, I bought my first camera with the idea of filming kayaking adventures. Then COVID-19 hit. With nothing but time on my hands, I dove deep into learning the craft, taking photos at every opportunity, from walks to social events, constantly chasing moments through the lens. I became obsessed.
Over time, the combination of kayaking and camera work turned into something unique. It gave me access to places very few people ever see—remote, wild, and often only accessible by navigating Class V whitewater. This rare pairing has taken me on some incredible expeditions, including filming in Northern Quebec and beneath Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River.
In May, I made the leap and resigned from my drilling job. Whether it was the right move, I don’t yet know—but I have no regrets. I'm currently working on a personal film project that I hope will open the door to more opportunities to document and photograph beautiful, hard-to-reach places.
